There are lots of way to provide heat for chicken coop, but the best way is to have special heat lamp. I highly recommend 250 Watt red heat lamp, and this lamp should be infrared heat lamp. This is easiest, safest, and cheapest technique to heat a chicken coop. You should place the heat lamp at the center of the chicken coop. This is important because heat can reach everywhere easily. As I said, you should buy a red heat lamp. Red is actually provide darker environment if we compare it with the white one. This darker environment helps chicken sleep better. Sleeping in comfortable chicken coop is really one of the most important things for baby chicks and chickens.

Baby chicks need special temperature, so heating a chicken coop in winter is a challenge for most of the chicken coop owners. The first weeks are very important for baby chicks. First week, you should set the temperature of the chicken coop to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celcius). You should decrease this temperature value by 5 degrees Fahrenheit every week until baby chicks become mature enough. This decreasing temperature process usually lasts for about 4-5 weeks.

You need to keep in mind that mature chickens do not need any heat source to live. They do not need warm environment to live. They actually can adapt cold environment, so you do not need to place heat lamp for mature chickens in winter. However you need to be careful about their water supply. They can adapt cold weather, but they cannot adapt to live without water. Cold weather can freeze their water supply, so you need to change their water supply periodically.
